Calhoun County Correctional Facility Release Routes
The Calhoun County Correctional Facility holds more than one kind of detainee. A person in a local criminal case may leave on bond, recognizance, a dismissal, another court order, or completion of a county sentence. That person may return to the community. Yet the same person could leave the jail because Calhoun County transported them to the Michigan Department of Corrections, another county with a warrant, the U.S. Marshals Service, or ICE. In those cases, county custody ended while custody itself continued.
The strongest local proof is the final jail custody transaction. It should tie a booking identifier to the release date and time, disposition, and destination when those fields exist. A court order explains why release was authorized. The jail movement shows what occurred at the door. Use both when a hold or transfer is possible. Calhoun County does not publish a historical release catalog, so the official current roster cannot provide that full chain after a name disappears.
| Departure from the facility | Best confirmation route |
|---|---|
| Bond, court order, or county sentence complete | Final jail release entry plus the Calhoun court order |
| Transfer to Michigan prison | County movement destination plus the statewide MDOC OTIS profile |
| Transfer on another jurisdiction's hold | County movement entry and the receiving agency |
| Federal criminal custody | USMS or BOP record, depending on the case stage |
| ICE contract custody | ICE locator, ICE ERO, or ICE FOIA rather than County FOIA |
Important: “Released from Calhoun” can mean only that the Sheriff transferred the person to a different legal custodian.
Confirm Calhoun County Correctional Facility Release
Begin with the Calhoun Police-to-Citizen search. The Sheriff describes it as current inmate information. A live result supports current county custody. No result has several possible causes, including a spelling mismatch, data delay, a community release, or a transfer. Record the last time the person was listed, then move to an affirmative source. The broader Calhoun County released-inmate search explains how county, state, court, VINE, and federal sources fit together.
A focused sequence reduces false conclusions:
- Search the current roster by the person's full legal name and reasonable spelling variants. Treat absence only as a lead.
- For a same-day question, call the Corrections Center with the full name and date of birth or booking number. Ask whether Calhoun still holds the person and whether the recorded departure was release or transfer.
- Check the matching Calhoun case in MiCOURT. A bond, dismissal, judgment, or sentencing event can supply the legal basis, though it may not show the actual exit time.
- If a Michigan prison sentence appears, search MDOC OTIS. OTIS does not cover a person who served only a county-jail term.
- Request the final custody-movement entry when the online sources do not resolve the event.
A VINE event can corroborate an agency-reported release or transfer. It is not the archival release record. Likewise, a closed court case alone does not show that all holds cleared. The most sound finding names the agency, event, and date instead of treating “not found” as proof.
Note: A current-roster disappearance should remain unconfirmed until a jail record, agency status, court order, or direct custodian response explains it.
Calhoun County Correctional Facility Release Records
The Sheriff's official locations page identifies the Corrections Center as a continuous operation. Same-day custody questions belong at the jail line. Written document requests go through the Sheriff Records Division or the County's online portal. These are distinct channels. The public desk has narrower hours, while the jail phone remains available around the clock.

Submit a narrow request through the Calhoun County NextRequest portal. Identify the person by full name, date of birth, known aliases, and booking number if known. Ask for the existing booking sheet and final custody-movement or release entry. Name the approximate booking period. If transfer is at issue, request any existing field that identifies the receiving agency. Electronic delivery can help keep the scope clear.
The Sheriff's published service lists a $2 incarceration-record search and says photo identification is required for release of incarceration records. A full FOIA request may have other costs. The Records Division instructions also explain that an estimate above $50 may require a deposit. Michigan's five-business-day rule governs the agency's response category, not guaranteed delivery of every record within five days.
The matching manifest capture comes from the Calhoun County FOIA and records-routing page.
The county page is useful because it separates records held by Calhoun County from court files and ICE detention records held elsewhere.
Calhoun County Correctional Facility Release Profile
The Sheriff describes the Calhoun County Correctional Facility as an adult direct-supervision jail. Direct supervision means officers work within the living units rather than only watching from a remote post. The site opened in 1994 and is rated for 630 inmates and detainees. About 120 staff work there, and the stated local average population is 275 to 325. These figures describe the facility, not the number of releases.
Population type matters more than capacity during a release search. The jail holds pre-sentenced and sentenced local detainees. It also rents unused beds to other cities, counties, and the federal government. Corrections staff transport detainees to courts and other facilities. Thus, two people can leave the building on the same day but enter very different legal states. One may be home on bond. Another may be en route to state prison.
- Community release
- Physical custody ends and no other custodian takes immediate control.
- Transfer
- Custody moves to another facility or agency. The person is not free.
- Detainer
- A request or legal hold through which another authority can assume custody.
- Parole
- Release from state prison while MDOC supervision and jurisdiction continue.
Calhoun County Release Follow-Up
A local bond release can carry a prompt next step. The Calhoun County PTS-Community Corrections instructions say a recently released person with an active felony case must report within 24 hours and bring bond paperwork. The office is in room J212 at the Justice Complex, in the first office to the left after security. Its published weekday hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the phone is 269-969-6790, option 4.
This instruction does not apply to every person leaving the Calhoun County Correctional Facility. It applies to the stated active-felony, post-release situation. It also does not convert a pretrial bond release into sentence completion. The criminal case remains pending, and court conditions still govern. Keep the bond papers because they connect the jail departure with the court file and the correct local reporting path.
Transportation planning is separate. Battle Creek Transit identifies Route 2E as serving the Justice Complex, but schedules, direction, and fares should be checked on the travel date. The Sheriff does not publish a standard exit, family waiting area, release hour, property-return process, or facility-provided ride. Call before traveling or waiting at the secure complex.
Note: The jail operates continuously, but the public desk and Community Corrections office keep narrower schedules for their separate functions.
ICE Releases at Calhoun Facility
Calhoun County's federal contract role makes release language unusually exact. ICE detainees can be housed inside the county-owned and Sheriff-operated building, but ICE remains the relevant custodian for its detention records. A physical departure may be a transfer to another immigration facility, removal from the United States, or release from ICE custody under conditions. It must not be labeled a community release merely because the person left Battle Creek.
Search the ICE Online Detainee Locator System by the nine-digit A-number and country of birth, or by exact biographical fields. The locator may omit minors, some recent bookings, and people outside its released-person window. If it fails, use ICE ERO for current custody. Archived detention material belongs with ICE FOIA. Calhoun County's own FAQ says even detention records produced locally for an ICE detainee remain ICE records.
The official ICE FOIA page shown below is the correct document-request lead for that federal file.
Use the ICE route for the immigration detention record and the county route only for records Calhoun actually controls. If a federal criminal defendant moved through the jail under a USMS contract, the federal docket or USMS request path may be needed instead. A later BOP record applies only after entry into Bureau of Prisons custody.
Read Calhoun County Correctional Facility Records
A record should be read by agency and time. Booking date, release date, release reason, receiving agency, bond, court number, and holds each answer a different point. Calhoun County has not promised that every release entry contains every field. Ask for existing fields rather than requiring staff to create a narrative. When names are common, match the date of birth, booking number, and case number before drawing a conclusion.
The court judgment and the final custody movement work as a pair. A filed dismissal can end one case while a second hold keeps the person confined. A state sentence can end county jail custody but begin MDOC custody. A VINE transfer event can report movement without showing the full legal order. Carefully naming each event protects the dignity of the person and keeps an allegation, conviction, transfer, and release from being blurred together.
Older state-prison outcomes follow another timeline. OTIS can show prisoners, parolees, probationers, and people discharged from MDOC supervision within its three-year public window. It excludes county-jail-only cases. A parole date reflects release from prison to supervision; a discharge date means MDOC jurisdiction ended. Neither should be substituted for the Calhoun County Correctional Facility's local release transaction.
