Calhoun County Release Meanings
A release must be tied to an agency and a time. At the Calhoun County Correctional Facility, a person may leave after posting bond, completing a county sentence, receiving a court order, or moving to another custodian. That last outcome is easy to miss. The jail houses local detainees and contract populations, so departure from the Battle Creek building can mean transfer to the Michigan Department of Corrections, another county, the U.S. Marshals Service, or ICE. Physical departure does not always mean return to the community.
Parole, probation, and discharge also mean different things. Parole is release from state prison while MDOC supervision continues. Probation is a court-ordered community sentence and may follow jail, but it does not prove a prison release. Discharge ends MDOC jurisdiction. The strongest Calhoun County released-inmate finding therefore joins the final custody entry to a court, corrections, or federal record instead of relying on one missing roster result.
- Time served
- The imposed county term has been satisfied.
- Detainer
- A hold that lets another agency assume custody.
- Parole
- Community release while a state sentence remains under MDOC supervision.
- Discharge
- The end of MDOC supervision or jurisdiction for the displayed sentence.
Calhoun County Release Types
The label on the final transaction controls the next search. A bond release leaves the criminal case open, while a dismissal ends the legal basis for that booking unless another hold exists. A transfer closes Calhoun County custody but begins or continues custody elsewhere. Death can also end a custody record, yet it is plainly not a community release. These distinctions keep a record search factual and prevent a transfer from being reported as freedom.
| Release type | Meaning | Next official source |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or recognizance | County custody ends under court conditions | Final jail entry, bond order, MiCOURT |
| Sentence complete | A county term has been served | Jail release time and judgment |
| Parole | Prison ends; MDOC supervision continues | OTIS Date Paroled and status |
| Discharge | MDOC jurisdiction ends | OTIS Discharge Date or MDOC record |
| Agency transfer | Custody changes hands | Receiving agency locator or record |
| Court-ordered release | A filed order authorizes release | Court order plus jail movement |
A disposed or closed case does not supply an exit time. Likewise, a county release date does not rule out an ICE hold or another warrant. Read the movement destination, the court authority, and the next custodian together.
Calhoun County Release Record Fields
The most useful county document is the final custody transaction linked to the booking identifier. Calhoun County does not publish a historical release dataset or a field dictionary. The items below are therefore fields to request, not a promise that each will appear or be public in every case. Asking for the booking sheet and final movement entry gives Records staff a defined existing record to locate.
| Requested field | What it can establish |
|---|---|
| Full name and aliases | The identity tied to the booking |
| Booking number | The exact custody episode |
| Booking date and time | When county custody began |
| Release date and time | When Calhoun custody ended |
| Disposition or reason | Bond, time served, court order, or another stated outcome |
| Receiving agency | Whether the event was a transfer |
| Holds or detainers | Whether another custodian could take over |
| Court and bond identifiers | The case and order connected to release |
| Booking photograph | The image associated with that county booking, if available and releasable |
The county does not publish how long a former booking stays visible in Police-to-Citizen. MDOC uses a different rule: OTIS includes people discharged from supervision during the preceding three years. Older county records go through Records or the court, while older state-prison material may require MDOC Records or the Archives of Michigan.
Request Calhoun County Release Records
Use the Calhoun County NextRequest portal or submit a written request to the Sheriff Records Office. Michigan FOIA applies to existing county records. It does not require staff to answer a question, build a narrative, or create a custom list that the county does not maintain. A named booking and a narrow date range are easier to identify than a request for every fact about a person.
- Give the full legal name, date of birth, booking number if known, and an approximate booking date.
- Ask for the booking sheet, final custody-movement or release entry, and booking photograph.
- Request any existing field for release date and time, disposition, receiving agency, and holds at the end of county custody.
- State that electronic copies are preferred and that no new record or analysis is requested.
- Keep the portal receipt and review any written fee, extension, redaction, denial, or clarification notice.

The Records Division lists a $2 incarceration-record search and requires photo identification for that service. FOIA charges vary, and an estimate above $50 may support a deposit request. Under Michigan FOIA, five business days is the normal deadline for a response category, not a guarantee that all records will arrive within five days. The county may grant, partly grant, deny, extend, or send an authorized fee notice.
The official Records Division page shows the incarceration search and request routes.
This source separates the small incarceration search service from a broader written records request, which may involve different fees and review.
Calhoun County Bond Release Reporting
Calhoun County publishes a specific next step after some bond releases. A recently released person who still has an active felony case must report to PTS-Community Corrections within 24 hours, enter the Justice Complex, use the first office to the left after security, and bring bond paperwork. This instruction applies to that defined group. It is not proof that every released person is on probation, and it is not the same as reporting to an MDOC parole agent.
The office is in room J212 at 161 E. Michigan Ave. in Battle Creek. Its published hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and its phone is 269-969-6790, option 4. Bond paperwork connects the court order to the local pretrial reporting duty. The final jail transaction still supplies the actual custody-end time.
The Community Corrections instructions show this local release step.
The official wording helps distinguish conditional pretrial release from sentence completion or state discharge.
Calhoun County Release Turnover Context
The Sheriff reported 6,252 jail bookings in 2020, a figure 38 percent below 2019. That dated statistic shows the scale of booking activity during a specific historical year. It is not a present release total. Bookings also cannot be converted into releases because one person can have more than one booking, and a custody episode can end in transfer rather than community release.
The annual-report figure is useful only with its year and label intact. For an individual Calhoun County release, use the named booking and final custody entry instead of a broad turnover estimate.
Calhoun County Post-Release Booking Fee
The Sheriff Records page describes a separate $12 booking fee. It states that the five-business-day payment period begins with the release day. The same source provides a refund-request route when criminal prosecution ended or the person was found not guilty on all charges. This is a concrete post-release obligation and possible refund process, not a fee for downloading a public release list.
Check the current Records page before paying or relying on penalty details because local procedures can change. Keep the booking, payment, and case-disposition documents together. A dismissal or acquittal record comes from the court, while the booking transaction and fee administration remain with the Sheriff.
Find Calhoun County Released Inmates
Begin with the likely custodian, then test each handoff. The official Police-to-Citizen page is a current-inmate tool. A live result supports current county custody at the time shown. A missing result can reflect release, transfer, spelling, data timing, or a search mismatch. Record the last positive roster observation and use a full name plus date of birth or booking number when calling.
- Check the county current roster to learn whether the person is still listed.
- For a same-day event, call the 24-hour Corrections Center at 269-969-6303 and ask about county custody versus agency transfer.
- Search both relevant Calhoun courts for the bond, dismissal, judgment, or sentencing authority.
- Use OTIS only if a Michigan prison sentence or MDOC supervision applies.
- Check VINELink for a person-specific custody event or register before an expected change.
- Use BOP or ICE tools for the federal component, then request the final record from the actual custodian.
- File a narrow county request when an online page does not preserve the release transaction.
A name disappearing from Calhoun P2C does not confirm community release. Verify the final movement and any receiving agency.
For a same-day window, use the county’s no-feed fallback: current roster, Corrections Center, court event, and final movement record. A named-person search still needs the full evidence chain above.
Michigan Release Records in OTIS
The Michigan Department of Corrections OTIS gateway covers prisoners, parolees, probationers, and people discharged from MDOC supervision within the preceding three years. It excludes county-jail-only sentences, city lockups, people not yet sentenced to MDOC, many older discharged records, and some photos. That boundary matters in Calhoun County because a jail sentence does not create an OTIS record.
Select Discharged when checking completed MDOC jurisdiction, Parolees when checking release from prison to supervision, or All if the status is uncertain. Open the profile. Read Current Status with Date Paroled, Discharge Date, supervision fields, Assigned Location, and the controlling sentence. “Parolee - Held under custody” reports both a past parole event and present custody, so it must not be shortened to “free.”
| OTIS field | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Offender Number | The most precise six-digit MDOC identifier |
| Offender Status | Filter prisoner, parolee, probationer, discharged, or absconder records |
| Date Paroled | Historical date prison ended and parole status began |
| Discharge Date | End of MDOC jurisdiction for a discharged profile |
| Assigned Location | Prison or supervision office, not always a current physical location |
| Earliest Release Date | Parole eligibility, not a promised release |
The official OTIS search form exposes these filters.
The form’s status choice is the key distinction between a current prisoner, a parolee, and a person whose MDOC supervision has ended.
Calhoun County Recent Release Limits
Calhoun County publishes no official recent-release view, rolling 24-hour list, 72-hour list, historical booking feed, update cadence, or post-release display period. The Sheriff describes P2C only as “Current inmate information.” It does not publish a released-person archive that can be sorted into a valid daily list. No official Sheriff inmate-release mobile app was found either. ICS Mobile is for video visitation, not custody research.
For a date window, ask whether the Sheriff maintains an existing daily release log or report for the dates. Michigan FOIA does not require creation of a custom compilation. If no report exists, narrow the request to a named booking and the final custody transaction. VINELink and a court event can corroborate an event, but neither replaces the jail’s archival movement record.
The official jail page identifies the live roster as current-inmate access.
That wording is why absence from the roster is only a lead, never a confirmed release result.
Calhoun County Release Support Office
Calhoun County Community Corrections is a local office, separate from MDOC parole and probation. Its programs include pretrial services, community supervision, Community Re-entry, and START. The office can be relevant after a bond release with an active felony case, but its role should not be generalized to everyone leaving jail. First identify the court status and the instructions on the person’s bond paperwork.
State supervision uses different offices and records. OTIS Assigned Location points to the relevant MDOC field office. The Calhoun County Parole Office and Calhoun County Probation Office have different East Michigan Avenue addresses and phone numbers. Their separate routes matter when checking discharge or a reporting assignment.
Correct Calhoun County Release Records
Keep the document that controls the disputed fact. Bond paperwork belongs with the local release transaction. If an OTIS error came from a judgment, obtain the filed clarification or order from the sentencing court. If the issue is supervision status or assignment, contact the named agent or office. A valid set-aside order must reach MDOC Records Administration before the public state record can be corrected or removed under the applicable law.
These are different correction routes because no single office owns every fact. The jail owns its booking movement. The court owns the legal order. MDOC owns its supervision and discharge fields. Sending a general correction request to an unrelated website will not change the government record.
Calhoun County Court Release Proof
Michigan courts are outside county FOIA. Calhoun County therefore routes court files to the Circuit Court Clerk, District Court, or MiCOURT Case Search. A felony can start in District Court and move to Circuit Court after bindover, so search both when the case path is unclear. Ask for the judgment of sentence, dismissal order, bond or release order, and relevant register entries rather than an undefined request for all information.
The court record shows legal authority. The jail movement shows operational release time and destination. Both may be needed. MiCOURT also excludes juvenile and child-protective proceedings, and some displayed criminal convictions are affected by court filters. A missing online case can reflect confidentiality, age, court participation, name variation, or set-aside status.
Michigan set-aside rules can make a conviction nonpublic and can lead to OTIS removal after a valid order reaches MDOC. Do not use cached booking material to bypass a sealed or nonpublic status. For an individual record issue, use the court of conviction and current official Clean Slate materials.
Calhoun County ICE Release Records
The Calhoun County Correctional Facility rents beds to the federal government and houses ICE detainees. That contract model makes receiving-agency information unusually important. A person leaving the building may be transferred within immigration custody, removed from the United States, released under immigration conditions, or moved under another federal process. The county roster cannot settle which outcome occurred.
Calhoun County’s FOIA FAQ states that ICE detainee records remain ICE records, including detention records generated locally. Search the ICE Online Detainee Locator using the A-number and country of birth or exact biographical fields. The locator excludes minors and can miss recent or older events. For an archival record, use ICE FOIA, not a county request.
| Custody path | Best current source | Best release proof |
|---|---|---|
| Calhoun local jail | P2C and Corrections Center | Final county movement entry |
| Michigan prison | OTIS | Date Paroled or Discharge Date |
| ICE detainee | ODLS and ICE ERO | ICE record or authorized case file |
| Federal sentence | BOP Inmate Locator | BOP release status and federal record |
Calhoun County Release Notifications
Michigan VINE can provide a person-specific custody check and event notice through VINELink. Select Michigan, search by name or identification number, verify the reporting agency, then register for the offered phone, text, or email method. Phone registration uses a four-digit PIN to acknowledge calls. A release notice reflects what the contributing agency reported; it does not rule out a transfer, warrant, or immediate assumption of custody by another agency.
VINELink is not a historical 24-hour or 72-hour list. The BOP Inmate Locator covers sentenced federal prisoners from 1982 onward, while USMS pretrial custody lacks a comparable public release-history search. A BOP “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” result does not resolve state, local, immigration, or supervised-release questions. Match the result to the exact federal component before drawing a conclusion.
Calhoun County Release Facilities
Two county facilities require different public routes. The adult correctional facility has a public current-inmate entry point, a staffed Corrections Center, and county release-record process. The Youth Center is a secure juvenile facility. Adult P2C does not cover it, public MiCOURT excludes juvenile proceedings, and release information must remain within authorized juvenile-court and facility channels.
- Calhoun County Correctional Facility: local releases may return to the community or transfer to MDOC, another jurisdiction, USMS, or ICE.
- Calhoun County Youth Center: detention and placement decisions are handled through confidential juvenile channels.
No operating Michigan state prison or BOP institution was identified inside Calhoun County. A resident serving a state sentence can be placed anywhere in MDOC, so use OTIS rather than assuming a local prison. Federal custody likewise follows the responsible federal agency, not county geography.
